Chapter Sixteen

No. Marie didn’t find Alexa’s comment about her mate funny. And she was most definitely not going to chill. Brent was in danger.

Her heart wrenched with an ache at Nick humiliating her mate in front of everyone. She wanted to pound the dickhead in his face, so he’d shut the hell up.

Then everyone kept on him, asking him questions, pushing for details. Didn’t they see he was about to lose it? When he was close to shifting, she grabbed his arm and pulled him out the kitchen door to the woods.

She backed him against a tree and wrapped her arms around his shaking body. “It’s okay, baby. I’ve got you.” They swayed like the slow roll of a train, breathing in each other and nature.

Her heart beat in time with his when he finally calmed to normal.

“Why do I feel so out of control with myself?” he asked her. “These emotions and sensory perceptions are bombarding me. I can’t handle them all.” He buried a hand in her hair and squeezed her to him. He needed her more than she needed him. She understood the shifter lifestyle, the superhuman abilities and how to use them. More importantly, when to use them.

“You’ll get used to them. I promise,” she whispered in his ear. “Your wolf has made your human side so much more. You are tuned in to the world far more. You’ll hear, see, taste, feel more than ever before.”

He didn’t know that he could run so fast that he would be a blur to people. That his wolf could be vicious enough to take down an elephant. That he could smell explosives buried underground ten feet away or see a rat hundreds of feet away in total darkness. She had so much to show him.

“You’ll help me with this, won’t you?” he pleaded. “You aren’t going to leave me to figure this out on my own?”

She pulled away enough to stare into his eyes. Why would he think that? Because he was used to human betrayal and fickleness. She shook her head. “No. Never. I’m your mate. Remember what I told you a mate was?” He nodded, hope filling his eyes.

What had this man lived through to trust so little? To expect the world to abandon him to survive on his own? Nope, she’d never do that. She’d be there for him forever. He had a lot to learn. This was as good a time as any to get started.

“Take your clothes off.” She gave him a wink when his eyes got large. “We’re going to shift and go for a run. We both need it.”

She didn’t want to talk about what he did to get assassins on his ass or how he was related to the military—she didn’t think he was a soldier. The professional killers hadn’t found him at the house, and she and Brent had been here a while. If they hadn’t come, maybe Alexa was right and they couldn’t find him. They just got lucky in town.
